For those who haven't noticed by now, every time its our kick off at the start of a match we do the exact same thing every time.

The ball is passed straight back to Muscat who then bombs it up field towards our strikers. On most occasions we lose possession straight away or it goes out indirectly for a throw in.

Its absolutely pointless. Ever heard of keeping possession? Its the most bizarre thing and you rarely see any other teams do it. Actually, Australia has done it on a few occasions in which we've boot it up to Josh Kennedy from the kick off.

Anyway, I don't get why we persist with it. Surely the other teams all know we do it by now. I'd just like us to keep the ball from kick off and try to start an attacking play rather than risk losing possession straight away.

Thoughts?

Ever since he choose to sign on for another year I've been very critical of our clubs greatest ever servent. Did he sign on for the right reasons?

When he first signed for Melbourne some 6 years ago he came to the club with a controversial reputation, but over the journey we have learnt that while he can have aggressive brain fades and thuggish tendencies on the pitch, he has also lead the team from the back and has always given us a strong and passionate backbone.

When he went down with a hamstring last year against Adelaide, a lot of people thought he might close the book on a long and distinguished career. At 36, it seemed Melbourne finally had enough depth up back to cover for him and most thought that he would take his place in the MVFC backroom while also leaving the game on his terms, a club champion and a trophy winner.

But, after that farcical press conference, and at a time when MVFC could probably allocate the wages his retirement would've freed up to lure a big name striker, he announced his intentions to go around once more.

Not such a big deal if it was a Tommy Pondeljak, a Hayden Foxe or a John Aloisi; getting a sprinkle of substitute appearances when required and even the odd start in their final year. But as its Kevin Muscat; the man who has practically picked MVFC's starting 11 for six years, Merrick has always felt obliged (and perhaps scared not to) pick him.

After an indifferent start to the season, our defense (admittedly receiving no assistance from our goalkeeper) has been leaking too many goals. And in our first three games, Muscat should've been sent off three times. He has always been a thug, but now that he has lost his pace (and passing ability it seems) he is running the risk of leaving the game as an over the hill hack who is more concerned about concentrating on unsportsman like tactics to antagonise opposition players than leading his own team by playing quality football. If any other player had put in the performances he has at the start of this season he would be banished to the Youth Team.

Is it time Merrick looked to the future of our club? Adrian Leijer plays out of position while young Matt Foschini rots away on the bench because Merrick builds a formation around accomodating his captain. Yes he is a club champion, a pioneer and an inspirational leader but I dare say if he goes on like he has he will leave the club (and its supporters) on bad terms.

When the Heart come on the scene this year a lot of people starting say we'd take a massive hit. That we'd lose supporters, sponsors, etc, but we're not that far of where we were last year.

Its up to us to get the 50/50s onboard! Nearly all of us would know atleast one fence sitter that with a decent nudge will take the plunge this year and sign-up. Its up to us to convince them to get over the line and push the whole shebang towards 20,000. The next 2-3 weeks is key, its up to us to spread the gospel, our efforts over the next 2-3 weeks will determine the final figure and also contribute to a positive vibe onfield...
